A heat pump consists of four major components - a compressor, a condensor, an expansion valve, and an evaporator. It also has a reversing valve, which distinguishes it from an air conditioner.

The first heat pump was invented in 1856 by Austrian engineer Peter von Rittinger. This device used the latent heat in water vapor for the evaporation of salt brine. Thus, the first heat pump was used to dry salt in salt marshes.
